Jen Nails It Challenge Southern Style

http://www.jenerallyinformed.com/p/blog-page_9.html
I am a true American, meaning my cultural roots come from all over the place. My mother is a Mexican American and was born in Chihuahua Mexico, so cooking Mexican food is pretty much standard at all of our family gatherings. I can make enchiladas, tacos, burros, red chile sauce, beans, etc. You name it I make it and love it.

One thing I have NEVER EVER tried to make is Southern comfort food. My husband and children feel this is a situation that apparently needs to be remedied.

So, for my 3rd installment of the Jen Nails It Pinterest Challenge I will attempt to make a bona fide Southern dinner with fried chicken as the star!

I understand from my research that most fried chicken recipes have been handed down from generation to generation, can be decades even a hundred years old and are almost a living breathing entity in some families. Yup, I should totally be able to NAIL this bad boy for sure.

Here's the Pinterest recipe and photo for my fried chicken escapade!

According to Minnie and one of my favoritest movies of all time, The Help, I will need to make sure I have a big old container of this on hand.

Hmmmm, I might just try putting some under my eyes as Minnie suggests.

Now I want this experience to be authentic for the JENerally Informed family members so what sides should I serve, because if I am doing this we are going BIG!

Grits? Collared Greens? None of which, might I add, I have ever made. Here's my Southern Foods Pinterest Board.

What sides would you make?

I'll get working on this and let you know when this challenge will be going live here on the blog.

Girl, this post is for me. I'm from the south and love all those things listed. EXCEPT, I don't fry chicken anymore. Too messy. But Minny is right about how to fix it. I make the best garlic cheese grits casserole and would love to share the recipe with you anytime. And don't forget the BBQ!!!

Tammy- you are my go to girl on this. So glad you stopped by!
That's because Jamberry is the best. AND it's non-toxic so it's not a "nail polish strip" that you have to soak in remover to get it off. Jams come off with coconut or olive oil best.
Oh yum... I rarely make fried chicken (like Tammy said, it's just so messy for me), but I do love it. I like to pair it with creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. And I mix those sides together, dip the chicken in and eat it. Sounds gross? But it's really good!

Oh that sounds good! So from the the two comments already I am to assume I will be burned and covered with oil by the end of this challenge! Looking forward to it :)
Haha, this post made me giggle :). I am about like you when it comes to southern food, I have Little to no experience in that department!

Yes this should definitely be one for the memory books. Or maybe not......
I can do fried chicken and Crisco is what we used too. I've not made it in years. My sides would be salad, potatoes and gravy (gravy from the fried chicken) and corn on the cob dripping in butter. Now I'm hungry.

Have a fabulous day. :)

Corn dripping with butter, yum. I'm hungry too! Why in the world have I never made all of this before?
Mexican food is sooo good. Mmm...I'm excited for your southern food adventure though I don't know anything about cooking southern food. But if you do it and it's easy enough, then I'll follow your lead! Thanks for going first lol

Well, hopefully it turns out good enough to even want to recreate! I understand that chances are high I will end up splattered in oil.
Good luck!! I would make some skillet potatoes (slices of potatoes, fried in oil), and southern green beans. Oh, and don't forget the homemade buttermilk biscuits! ;)

Homemade buttermilk biscuits. Now, that sounds delish!
I grew up as southern as southern gets. South Alabama. Fried chicken was rare, but we do love it. I hope it turns out perfectly!! Side dishes I LOVE, as a southerner: fried okra---but don't do that WITH fried chicken. Save that for another day. The right way to do collards: Buy them fresh. Wash them well. Boil them for an hour with a porkchop. You don't need any other seasoning whatsoever, no matter what the Yankees on Food Network say. ; ) Also: You don't need buttermilk to make buttermilk biscuits. Regular milk from your fridge and add a little extra butter to what the recipe calls for, and your biscuits will be delicious. Meanwhile, true southerners just pop open a can of green beans and a can of corn with that fried chicken, and you are DONE. Can't wait to see how this turns out! I'm so excited about this.....maybe I should write a post on southern cooking....

Thank you, thank you! I need all of this. Yes you totally need to write a post on southern cooking!
Yum. I spent 5 years living in North Carolina, and my favorite food there was Hush Puppies. Wish I could find somewhere around here that made them. Have a great week!
I love that you are cooking Southern food! I am born and raised Southern but I have a secret... I have never fried chicken! {gasp!}

Can't wait to hear how your's turns out!
